NEW YORK – Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, and Janet Morana, Executive Director, issued the following statements today after learning of the death of their friend and fellow pro-life activist Sandra Cano.
“My heart is broken that Sandra will never witness an end to abortion,” Mrs. Morana said. “She never wanted to have an abortion, she never had an abortion and she certainly never wanted to be a part of the Supreme Court decision, Doe V. Bolton, that opened the gates for legal abortion at any time during pregnancy and for any reason. I will work harder now, in Sandra’s memory, to make sure this harmful and deadly product is taken off the market.”
Father Pavone recalled that during a 1997 event at the National Memorial for the Unborn in Chattanooga, TN., Sandra said: "I pledge that as long as I have breath, I will strive to see abortion ended in America."
Calling her statement “a lasting hope for our nation,” Father Pavone said: “Sandra’s work to overturn that devastating decision that was based on lies will not end with her death. When life ultimately triumphs over death, Sandra will share in that victory.”
When Sandra Cano approached attorneys for help, she understood her case as an effort to obtain a divorce and regain custody of her children. She was pregnant, and her attorney, in partnership with her mother, arranged an abortion for Sandra at Georgia Baptist Hospital. When she found out about the plan, she fled to Oklahoma and never had the abortion.
