Dr.
Alveda King Salutes SCLC upon Its 50th
Anniversary, Prays for End to Violence against Tiniest Americans
Atlanta, GA – Dr. Alveda King,
Pastoral Associate of Priests for Life and niece of the Rev. Martin Luther King,
Jr., today paid tribute to the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which
is holding its 50th
Annual Convention this weekend in Atlanta.
“My Uncle Martin had a dream that
one day America would live out the creed that all men are created equal,” said
Dr. King. “Thanks to the SCLC’s 50 years of peaceful, purposeful work,
that dream is closer than ever to reality. I am humbled to be a part of an
organization that has struggled mightily for equality and respect for all
Americans.
“As we celebrate the SCLC’s
golden anniversary, though, I’m reminded that an entire class of people, a class
that is disproportionately African American, still suffers violence in our
country,” added Dr. King. “It was the violence afflicted on school
children in the South that moved a nation to strive for justice for all. I
pray that one day soon, the violence against our tiniest, most helpless
children, those yet unborn, will also end and we will lovingly welcome all
Americans into our beloved community.”
