HR 217 - Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act
HR 217, introduced on January 7, 2011 by Congressman Mike Pence (IN-6),
would “amend title X of the Public Health Service Act to prohibit family
planning grants from being awarded to any entity that performs abortions.”
If passed, the legislation would stop federal family planning funds from
being given to Planned Parenthood. As Congressman Pence said upon HR 217’s
introduction, “The largest abortion provider in America should not also be
the largest recipient of federal funding under Title X.”
According to a Government Accountability Office report, Planned Parenthood
received over $657 million in federal grants and contracts from 2002 to
2009.
