Statement on Health Care Reform
December 19, 2009
This statement may be attributed to Fr. Frank Pavone, National
Director of Priests for Life, the largest pro-life ministry in the Catholic
Church. Joining in this statement is also the National Pro-life
Religious Council, of which Fr. Pavone serves as President.
"The provisions regarding abortion in the Senate health care bill are
unacceptable to us and the Churches we represent. Passage of this bill in
the Senate will therefore require us to vigorously oppose ultimate passage
of health care legislation when a reconciled bill is presented to the House
and the Senate.
"Throughout the nation, the voices that now will matter most are not those
of compromisers on Capitol Hill, but rather the voices of the women and men
who regret their involvement in abortion. The health care problems and other
wounds they bear as a result of abortion will be the evidence to show our
nation that abortion is not the solution to anything. We will see to it that
those voices are heard, and that Church congregations throughout America
take their pro-life convictions into the voting booths in November."
