Alveda King and other Black Leaders in Washington, DC for Health Care Press Conference

A Press conference was held in Washington, DC on August 18, 2009.  The subject of the press conference was, “Black Leaders on Capitol Hill: Let’s Define the Dream – Genocide is not Health Care.”

Particpants were Dr. Alveda King, Priests for Life Director of African American Outreach
and niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; Day Gardner, President, National Black Pro-Life Union; Kristen Day, Executive Director, Democrats for Life; Bishop Harry Jackson, Senior Pastor, Hope Christian Church, and Founder, High Impact Leadership Coalition; Donna J. Harrison, M.D., President, American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists; Pastor Dean Nelson, Executive Director, Network of Politically Active Christians.

They discussed three key points:

- Abortion is not health care;

- In the Beloved Community envisioned by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., equal justice means that young people in the womb are not terminated and old people in ill health are not denied care because of their age; and

- Now is the time for Democrats and Republicans to come together to stand for compassionate care for all Americans, joining the chorus of “Free At Last” as proclaimed in Dr. King’s “ I Have A Dream” speech.

The media that attended were Fox News Channel, CNN, CSPAN, Cox TV, Pro-Life News, Catholic News Service, WHUR radio, RTT News, Human Events and the Associated Press.
