Writer's Block: Politicians Should Stop Playing God

Since the debates began between the possible contenders for the 2008
presidential race, I've once again been paying close attention to all candidates
on both sides, hoping and praying that at least one person would be pro-life.
Sad fact is, I didn't see any pro-life Democrats so far and the one
Republican candidate who is at the top of the list of contenders is also
pro-choice.
What a sad world we live in when our politicians won't stop playing God and
help support an effort to bring to an end the atrocity of abortion -- the grave,
immoral act of killing an unborn child in the womb.
I read a headline on the Internet the other day that stated that the
Democrats are setting their sights on winning back Catholics. They believe that
Catholics are ideal targets because they tend to be less observant than
evangelicals and so are less likely to tow the church line politically.
All I want to say to them is, "Don't make me laugh."
Orthodox Catholics and conservative Evangelicals know full well what is going
on. Do the pro-choice Democrats, to make themselves feel better, actually
believe we are so lax in our faith that we would change our stance to support
their agenda? No. That will not happen. They also want people to believe that
Catholics face cross-pressures from their church to oppose abortion. No,
Democrats, try again. We are pro-life because we believe in the sanctity of
life.
In addition, nothing they could ever say -- other than "I promise to bring an
end to abortion" -- will cause us to vote for a pro-choice candidate -- Democrat
or Republican. If they truly want the Catholic vote, they need to do the right
thing and fight for the life of every human being, born and unborn.
Our clergy are working their hearts out for the little victims. Father Thomas
Euteneuer, president of Human Life International, reminded legislators that
"nothing threatens the American experiment more than the legal but unjust
killing of human beings by abortion." He also reminds them that this law stands
in stark contrast to the very right enumerated by our Declaration of
Independence: the right to life. Abortion is murder, and murder is against the
law.
Father Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, recently called for the
resignation of all pro-choice Catholic legislators and stood by Pope Benedict's
remarks to them, reminding the legislators, "It is not possible to advance
'respect for life and for the dignity of every human being' while tolerating the
dismemberment and decapitation of the human beings still in their mother's
wombs. These Catholic and other Christian legislators are not only
contradicting their faith, but they are contradicting the very meaning of public
service."
As a voter and as someone who is wondering which politician, if any, running
for office is going to be pro-life, I believe it's time for all who are running
for president or Congress to stop playing God by continuing to allow the
senseless slaughter of the unborn child -- a little human being who did not ask
to be conceived, but who was created by God and placed in the womb of a woman
who is supposed to be its natural protector. There are other choices that can be
made and abortion should never, ever be one of them. The pro-choice candidates
need to wake up to this fact if they want our votes.
